INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

TAILGATE HANDLE RELOCATER

97-04 DODGE DAKOTA

PART # 2886118

For best results, please read all instructions thoroughly prior to attempting installation of your SIR MICHAEL'S tailgate handle relocater. SIR MICHAEL'S recommends the use of approved hand, eye and ear safety equipment while performing this installation.  If you have any questions concerning the installation of your SIR MICHAEL'S tailgate handle relocater please contact our customer service department at (714) 379-6800, Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST).

NOTE: Any part that is modified and/or painted are non returnable.

  1. Remove the tailgate from the truck and place face down across saw horses or work bench.
  2. Remove the three bolts that hold the handle, disconnect latch rods and remove handle from tailgate. Figure 1,2
  3. Using diagram provided, cut back of tailgate to install relocater. Figure 3 & 4
  4. Mount handle into relocater using factory bolts. Figure 5
  5. Reverse plastic rod clips on handle. They should now snap in from the bottom. Figure 6
  6. Place handle relocater in tailgate and hook up latch rods.
  7. Using screws provided mount relocater to tailgate. Figure 7. Make sure handle and rods move freely.8.
  8. Turn tailgate over face up.9.
  9. Remove all paint from the original handle and approximately 2" around hole. Figure 810.
  10. Place supplied handle hole cover over existing hole and tack weld into place.  We recommend a mig (wire feed) welder.  NOTE:  Welding one continuous weld will cause tailgate to warp. Tack a small area and let cool then repeat until complete. Figure 911.
  11. Grind down the welds and finish off with body filler, (figure 10,11 & 12) block sand, primer and then paint.  Now you are ready to reinstall the tailgate back onto the truck.
